The market was established in March 2010, I’m sure many of you remember it. We were 8 stalls on what was the Kushoom Koly carpark, it slowly grew and we took over the upstairs of what was the Kro Bar’s ‘Upper Room’ for crafts,  with the food traders remaining in the carpark. It was good, Amanda Fourie built it from nothing, Stockport Council got behind us, the market was innovative at the time – you wouldn’t believe it now, there are so many markets! Amanda and I were briefly the poster girls of the Stockport area market scene and Amanda was invited to talk to all sorts of people within the Council.

We got too big for our boots. We knew we wanted to bring the market all completely outside. However, we were too many for the Kush carpark. We were trading on the 1st Saturday of the month at this point and we needed more room. The Council backed our application to go onto Shaw rd with enthusiasm, we just needed the agreement of the businesses that would be affected. All the businesses were 100% behind us until we went into the Fly Fishing Shop… remember that one? The response was absolutely not. His customers would not walk the 100m needed if there was a market on. His customers were of a certain demographic and age. There was absolutely no way he would endorse us. We had no idea anglers were quite so unfit😊

Consequently we moved to Sunday (anglers apparently don’t shop on Sundays – I guess they were all fishing?) Being married to an angler, I personally found this episode amusing and frustrating in equal measure….

So, there we are, the 1st Sunday in every month, except January. It’s all thanks to the Fly Fishing Shop. The shop isn’t even there anymore!

Most of my friends and acquaintances know of my jam / chutney making activities and so will offer me any spare fruit from their gardens – which I am very grateful for as it helps me extend my range of varieties and stock levels throughout the year.

This year the early spring and good summer has meant most fruits have given a bumper crop. So instead of the usual carrier bags, the spare fruit has been arriving in bucketfuls!

Over the last couple of months or so I have been given :

10 lb blackcurrants
2 lb redcurrants

40 lb plums

35 lb apples

62 lb damsons

This is all on top of the rhubarb, redcurrants, blackcurrants, gooseberries, damsons and apples I have picked from my own garden!

My freezer is now full to overflowing and I am “on the make” every spare moment I get.

In August I have made:

10 Jars of Lemon Curd

55 Jars of Chutney

75 Jars of Jam

70 Jars of Marmalade

18 Jars of Jelly

Total 228 jars!!!!
